What a great time so far! Thanks for your prayers and for spreading the word about our trip through the Southwest. Here are some of the highlights:
After a 7 hour drive on Thursday, we spent an entire 20 minutes at the beautiful Grand Canyon, but we watched the Grand Canyon film on IMAX which lasted 36 minutes. We spent the night in Flagstaff, AZ and enjoyed dinner at Granny’s Closet.
On Friday we made our way to Albuquerque where we spent the day with our good friends Dave and Kara Bruskas along with their 4 girls and Dave’s parents. We served with them in Seattle at The Anchor.
Dave set up an opportunity for me to be on the radio with Peter Benson on FM 107.1 as well as spending time with some of his young leaders and then speaking at City on a Hill in the Lobo Theater that night.
We ended the evening with a delicious meal at Frontier Restaurant.
On Saturday, we had a long drive all the way to Arlington, TX to get to Debbie’s parents’ house. Along the way we stopped and had lunch at The Big Texan in Amarillo, TX.
I could tell my kids are pure Californians as they had a hard time getting past the fact that there were “dead animals” on the wall. I explained hunting to them, but I am unsure they understood. Then we start feeling like we were in a people zoo. First, everyone seemed to be staring at us as if we were from another planet (perhaps our California clothes or all the hunting questions), and then all eyes turned to the stage as a man from Oklahoma was attempting to eat a 72 oz. steak within an hour. If he accomplished the feat, he would receive his “meal” for free. If not, he would owe $72.
In the end, he didn’t lose his lunch, but he didn’t finish it all in time either.
Even though the BBQ and sweet tea were delicious, it was still a bit unsettling to watch someone eating with a timer and trash can next to him. You can watch the spectacle live here.
