Exorcising the Devil

We are ordering pizza and watching the World Series tonight as a family (although Trevi seems to be coloring in her room right now).  I am interested for a few reasons:

Caleb’s Tiny division baseball team was the Rays. (For more team pics, go here).

The Dodgers gave us so many great memories this year.

Most of all, the Tampa Bay Rays have had one of the most improbable turnarounds in sports history.

From 1998-2007, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays average record was 65 wins and 97 losses, but this year they won 97 games and lost 65!  After finishing last in their division 9 out of the last 10 years (an average of 34 games behind their division winner), they beat the Red Sox and the Yankees (whose payrolls dwarf the Rays) and are now on the verge of winning the World Series.

They have a great chance too since they are playing the Phillies.  Teams from Philadelphia don’t usually win championships (can you tell I am still bitter that they beat the Dodgers?)

How did they turn things around?  Good drafts?  New free agents?  A strategic coach?  Their magical mohawks?

The real reason is spiritual:  Tampa Bay changed their name from the Devil Rays to the Rays before this season. If only they had thought to do that sooner!  🙂

The other great reason to watch:  If a player steals a base tonight, all every American gets a free taco at Taco Bell!  See www.stealabasestealataco.com for the details!
