Have you seen some of the pictures of the flooding in the midwest? There are some amazing homemade dams which were able to protect the homes threatened when the floodgates were opened. Here are a couple of pictures:

Imagine the amount of work these families put in to protect themselves from losing their homes in the midst of the flood. Even with all of this work, it is still way less work than they would have had to exert to clean up or rebuild.
This situation reminds me of the old phrase: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” More recently I saw this quote on twitter: “An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.” -R Kipling (via @ScottRJones)
