Debbie, the kids, and I saw Hugo, the film directed by Martin Scorcese today. All of us came away inspired. Caleb now wants to be a writer and filmmaker in addition to a rapper and professional football player. Debbie talked about writing children’s books. Any time a film can inspire you in some way, it is certainly worth watching.
The film had such important themes such as overcoming loss, connecting with others, the power of dreams, finding purpose, and leaving a legacy.
There were poignant moments and even some funny moments with Sasha Baron Cohen.
For us, we had an especially great experience by seeing it at the Alamo Drafthouse which showed footage before the movie of some of the silent films mentioned in the film along with footage from A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies. This bonus footage (an Alamo Drafthouse tradition) gave the film such great context for us.
The movie included this fantastic quote from Hugo:
“I’d imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn’t be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason.”
