At Gateway Church in Austin, we are going through a series through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). John Burke shared some of the following insights:
On Religion (beyond rules)
Matthew 5:17-48
Key verse: “Be perfect…” = mature, whole (Mt 5:48)
Jesus sets a bar that no one can reach. “You have heard it said don’t murder, I say don’t be angry” “you have heard it said don’t commit adultery, I say don’t look at a women lustfully.” So if no one can reach His bar why does he say be “perfect” in verse 5:48? Jesus reveals that God cares about our heart. He says “be mature as God in heaven is mature.” The Greek work is a gardening term used to describe a flower in full bloom. It is fully “mature” or in other words “perfect.”
