The Oasis Projekt – Help End Trafficking

My good friend Robb Overholt and his daughter Laney are about to do something crazy! They are planning to hike the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours in order to raise both funds and awareness for victims of human trafficking

Join us for a Celebratory and Casual Fundraiser on Monday, July 28th!
6-8pm
LFC Center at UT
1909 University Avenue, 78705

Ticket prices (which are a tax-deductible) to the fundraiser will include dinner, entertainment, access to silent auction, and door prizes. Please note that the topic is PG-13. Follow this link for tickets and/or more details: http://overholtoverhills.eventbrite.com/ – Additionally, if you would help us spread the word by inviting your friends and/or family here in Austin, that’d be amazing.

Check out Robb’s heart for this project:

Overholts Over Hills

I get the incredible privilege in my life of being free… free to speak, dance, eat out, you name it. As a part of this freedom, I get the inordinate privilege of speaking publicly professionally. In that context, I get to encourage others to live life in pursuit of greatness… to set audacious goals and go after pursuits that would carry them far past the ‘do-able’ existence of mediocrity. The thought of inspiring others to do this, while not pursuing my own ‘dare-to-be-great’ type of life is nauseating to say the least.

I am joining up with my good friend from Cali, Dug Shelby (hiker of the entire pacific west coast from Mexico to Canada, and cyclist of the entire continental US from Cali to Florida) to do the National Three Peaks Challenge in the UK this October. This challenge involves hiking the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales… all within 24 hours. Here’s the best part about Dug’s adventure journeys and why I am excited to join in: He does them all through the work of his very own Oasis Projekt, a non-profit organization dedicated to aid, (through funds and awareness), victims of human sex trafficking. Dug saw the atrocity of this modern day slavery up close while doing a photo assignment in India several years ago. God pierced his heart for these victims and he has gone to extraordinary lengths to commit his life to creating change on their behalf.

Human Trafficking is an issue that has been near to Shaula (my wife) and I’s hearts for many years, but our fervor to fight on behalf of these victims grew during the years we lived in Las Vegas. But it’s not just an issue in Nevada, or India. Trafficking exists throughout the world and at alarming levels in all 50 states here in the U.S. The average girl taken into sex slavery in the U.S. is between the ages of 12 and 17. These girls are forced to have sex on average anywhere between 20 and 48 times a day. I know, you want to stop reading, but please don’t. I understand that this is so prolifically evil that you would much rather wish you didn’t know. But therein lies the problem. It’s so debased that we can’t stomach it. And so it isn’t discussed… and it isn’t lobbied for near enough.

I get to take on this audacious challenge with my 16 year old daughter. Don’t think I don’t know how amazing that is. At a time when most fathers are losing their daughters to many other distractions, (not the least of which is other young men), I’m spending a great deal of my time, literally trail blazing while we train, all the while figuratively blazing a trail to bring about much needed awareness and support for such an important and dire issue. All this with my amazing daughter by my side. How great is that? I know. And I thank God.

What I want you to know is that I so very much appreciate her zeal in taking this challenge head on and her understanding that she can stand, and do something, for all of the woman and children who are forcibly taken into sexual slavery. I love my daughter. I love the story we are creating together. I love that her participation, while delaying other usual teenage gratification, is going to greater prepare her for an amazing “love story” of her own in her future. And I love that it is already an incredible “love story” with her father, her flawed earthly one and her perfect One in heaven. I marvel that she is acting on behalf of those who have never gotten the chance to live a real life “love story” of their own.

If you have any other questions, I’d be glad to answer them. If you’d like to meet, I’d be honored.

Below you will find the link for tickets and details again, along with several links where you can check out more about what we are up to… Again, words could never express our gratitude, but here are a couple to at least try: THANK YOU!!!”
