Session One – Mission with Rick Shurtz

Two Critical Thoughts:

1. Everybody has a mission.
Eph. 2:10

You are Plan A and there is no Plan B.

What you do matters!

God has good works for us to do! He has entrusted others to each if us.

2. Everybody working together is more powerful than everybody working alone.

1 Cor. 12:27 – We are Christ’s Body!

Yet even those of us serving may sense there is more to our purpose than what we are doing. We fear we don’t really know our purpose, or that we might have messed up God’s plan for our lives.

We can discover God’s plan for our lives in this season – no matter where we may be. We can be on mission whereever God has us.

What if everybody in our core knew their mission, and everybody knew their place in our co-mission?!

That would be revolutionary!

There is power in that kind of resolve and that kind of clarity.

Spiritual Seasons

Discover.    Develop.   Deepen.

Baptism marks the transition from the Discover season to the Develop season.

Acts 13:2-3 Barnabas and Saul were commissioned. The leaders prayed and laid their hands on them to send them out.

2 Timothy 1:6 Paul laid his hands on Timothy to commission him.

Just as Barnabas took Saul who became Paul, Paul had taken Timothy with him.

What if everyone at Gateway grew to know their mission and were commissioned into God’s calling for their lives.

Commissioning marks the transition from the Develop season to the Deepen season.

What is the commissioning process?

1. Personal process.
2. Private conversation.
3. Public commissioning.

There is one Mission.
There are many missions.

We follow Christ and His Mission. Matthew 28:18-20 – Lead people to Christ and help them grow in Christ.

Our goal is to find our mission within Christ’s Mission. Some of us will be sent overseas or to other churches and ministries. Most of us will discover our place in our mission in Austin through Gateway.

Prayer 1 – What would you like to say to me, God? What should I be listening for? Is there anything I need to confess or get out of the way so I can more clearly hear you today?

Prayer 2 – Despite my weaknesses and flaws, you have used me in the lives of others. Remind me of things you have done through me over the past year or throughout my life. I want to celebrate what you have done. What do you want me to learn from my past experiences that will help me discern your desires for my future?

Acts 2:17-18 God wants to speak to us and envision us!
