The Importance of Leadership by John Burke

Once a year, Gateway Church in Austin brings together our leaders from our global networks and campuses. This year we had leaders from Helsinki, Finland; Branson, Missouri; and all across the Austin area.

After celebrating stories of life change happening within our networks and campuses, our senior pastor John Burke shared the following message:

Those who lead in the church of Jesus are most honorable in God’s eyes!

The world honors power and fame and the wealthy, but God honors His servant leaders.

Our leaders at Gateway have pleased Jesus.

God is proud of you!!

You have chosen a road less traveled.

“The harvest is plentiful and the workers are few.” – Matthew 9:37

Don’t give up! What He has called us to do is challenging!

“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” – 1 Peter 5:2-4

God will reward your efforts!

“He will reward each person according to what they have done.” – Matthew 16:27

“We crave to be fully known and loved for who we are. When we have that love for God, we realize we don’t have to try to please others. We were created to be a loving person. If each of us loved the person we are with, we will change the world. This is hard though! It would be easier to become a brain surgeon or rocket scientist!” – Howard Storm

So how do we change our world together?

The Sunday Inspire service is like the Sermon on the Mount – a gathering of disciples, tax collectors, and prostitutes.

Serving networks are like the 70 – serving the physical and spiritual needs of our neighbors, co-workers, and friends!

Life groups and running partners create the opportunity for discipleship much like Jesus had the 12 and the 3.

Passing on Jesus’ Values

Come As You Are

None of us can do this alone. It’s either all of us together or less than what Jesus wants.

As Gateway, we are connected to 30,000 people in Austin if we all just loved 10 people around us!

As the Church works together in Austin, we have the capacity to love and serve 2,000,000 if we just loved the 10 people around us! That’s our entire city!

Live Connected

We need to create space for people who need community, life, and freedom.

Be Transformed

The world needs us to grow to become the people God has created us to be.

Change Your World

We are sent out to love others!
