“Accomplishing Our Mission” by Chris Hodges #GrowLeader22

In Birmingham, Alabama, The Church of the Highlands hosted their 13th GrowLeader Conference.

What do you exist to do?

God has given us this.

  • Know God
  • Find Freedom
  • Discover Purpose
  • Make a Difference

Measurable clear goals

What are you doing to try to accomplish what you exist to do?

How are you mobilizing the body of Christ?

What should we be doing right now?

Growth Drivers – the focuses of our church right now that move us further and faster.

What are you doing to accomplish our mission as the Church?

These were the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari…. The Merarites … Numbers 3:17, 25, 31, 36-37

1.Structure (financial policy, vision, values, ethics, leadership)

2.Systems (the things you see)

Systems deliver the vision.

There is often a disconnect between the vision and the systems.

Average church in USA is 200.

Why not larger?

85% it is a systems issue

Two emotions after a service:

  • Is that finally over?
  • Is that over already?

Go for the 2nd one!

The right system is the one that works. You don’t have to do what we do, but stop defending what’s not working.

1. Know God:

Invite your non-believing friend to a Church Service

Create church services where both unchurched people and Christians can know God intimately.

Celebration – life is so heavy, we need more praise and joy and celebration. Let this be the one place people can enjoy life! So many are depressed and struggling. Our people need a breath of fresh air!

Psalm 122:1, Isaiah 61:3,

“Serve the Lord with gladness.” – Psalm 100:2

Inspiration – facilitate and create an environment where God shows up

1 Corinthians 14:24-25

Preparation – people need content they can use on Monday.

Does it pass the “who cares?” test?

Salvation – create a place for someone to choose to follow Jesus.

Romans 10:13-14

2. Find Freedom:

Small Groups

We have cracked the code on groups. It’s the strongest part of our church that no one knows.

Create groups where people can build community, find freedom, and take next steps.

Don’t get hung up on why they meet up, but make sure the leader knows how to go through these 3 things.

Acts 20:20

•Be a church of groups, not with groups. It’s not an add on if what we do. It is what we do!

•Form groups based on the interest of the leaders.

•Intentionally form hub/anchor groups (men, women, students, freedom, prayer, marriage, outreach/serve)

•Use events to promote the hub/anchor groups.

•Meet weekly for ESPN (encouragement, scripture, prayer, and next steps)

Locate your people spiritually and help them take their next step.

•Use the semester system.

Groups can keep going with those who would like to do so.

•Groups are strengthened by pastors and coaches.

Embrace messy church. The early church was messy.

3.Discover Purpose

Growth Track

Create an easy, obvious, and effective Growth Track where people can discover their purpose.

Our people need to know the answer to this question:

What is your unique contribution to the Body of Christ?

Each on a Sunday night:

  • Step 1: Become a member of the church.
  • Step 2: Discover your God-given gifting and calling.
    Design reveals destiny.
How you are made points to what we are supposed to do.
  • Step 3: Connect to a team.
  • Step 4: Team nights and community nights

4.Make a Difference

Dream Team

Create a Dream Team of volunteers who make a difference somewhere.

New members attend an orientation in the ministry of their choice.

New members are developed by the leaders from each ministry area.

New members receive continual support, encouragement, training from the ministry leaders and online training modules.

Ephesians 2:10

This isn’t working as it used to work so we need to teach our people how to share their faith outside of the church.

3.Spiritual (the life, the personality)
