Matthew 9 – What If We Were To Pursue Jesus for Healing?

Jesus pushes against the religious leaders who felt they deserved God’s blessing for their righteousness.

In reality they were also sinners in need of forgiveness, they just didn’t want to admit it. Jesus came to rescue all of us. The key is we have to acknowledge we need to be rescued. We need God’s help! Jesus most often healed people who pursued Him or they had someone pursuing Jesus for healing on their behalf. We also discover that physical healing is amazing and possible through Jesus, but it’s also short lived and not nearly as important as spiritual healing. Jesus came to forgive sins and introduce God’s Kingdom.

Matthew 9 Notes:

A great summary statement of Matthew 9 comes from verses 35-36.

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” – ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭9‬:‭35‬-‭36‬ ‭NIV‬‬

At the end of Matthew 9, Jesus mentions the harvest is plentiful and the workers are few. As a result of that, we see earlier in this chapter that Jesus invites unlikely people to follow Him including a despised tax collector who is the author of this eyewitness account – Matthew.

Jesus pushes against the religious leaders who felt they deserved God’s blessing for their righteousness. In reality they were also sinners in need of forgiveness, they just didn’t want to admit it.
