Matthew 14 – How Do We Respond When We Lose Someone We Love?

In Matthew 14 we discover that John the Baptist was killed.

Jesus hears his cousin was killed and he wanted some time alone to grieve and connect to His heavenly Father.

If Jesus can do the miraculous, why did John die? The answer is we don’t really know.

We don’t know why God might choose to heal someone and seemingly let someone else pass away. Even though we don’t understand it now, we can trust the One that does.

When we lose someone, we may be tempted to walk away from God for not answering our prayers the way we would want. Instead, we need to lean into Him to help us through.

Matthew 14 Notes:

In Matthew 14 we discover that John the Baptist was killed. He had always been outspoken as he called out the religious leaders and now we discover he had called out a political leader and was under arrest. Herod was tricked into killing a man the people considered a prophet. Rather than protecting John the Baptist he chose to show off to his guests that he has the power and authority to give his wife’s daughter her evil request.

Jesus hears his cousin was killed and he wanted some time alone to grieve.

The crowds followed Him and miraculously he was able to feed 5000 men plus the women and children that were there! He then walks on water! These are two miraculous moments!!

It’s hard not to wonder: if Jesus can do the miraculous, why did John die?

The answer is we don’t really know.

We don’t know why God might choose to heal someone and seemingly let someone else pass away.

Even though we don’t understand it now, we can trust the One that does.

This world is filled with evil and tragically people die.

We don’t really know.

Fortunately Jesus teaches that this life is not all that there is.

When God doesn’t answer our prayers the way we want, we can choose to walk away from Him or we can choose to lean into our relationship with Him.

Jesus goes to the Father and so should we.
