Jesus clarifies what is actually required to make us clean. It’s about our hearts. It’s from our heart that we choose to live according to God’s ways or choose a more destructive path.
Now, as followers of Jesus, we do not have the same food laws as the Israelites while they were trying to survive in the wilderness.
In contrast to the resistance shown by the religious leaders, Matthew shows how open hearted a Gentile woman was towards faith.
We are starting to see people who were not looking for the Jewish Messiah now coming to him hoping he would rescue them!

Matthew 15 Notes:
Once again, the religious leaders confront jesus. This time it’s about washing hands. This isn’t what we do while we sing happy birthday in order to protect ourselves from germs. They were concerned Jesus wasn’t doing the ceremonial washing they felt was required by the law.
You see, in the New Testament, the followers of Jesus who were Jewish discovered what God required for being right with him. It wasn’t the food that made a person unclean but their thoughts and their actions. Eating some things considered unclean in the wilderness were totally permissible. fortunately for us bacon!
In contrast to the resistance shown by the religious leaders, Matthew shows how open hearted a Gentile woman was towards faith. Now you may think Jesus sounds like he’s being prejudiced towards her since she wasn’t Jewish. He was actually teasing her. In fact I could imagine this whole conversation that both Jesus and the woman had smiles as they bantered back and forth!
We are starting to see people who were not looking for the Jewish messiah now coming to him hoping he would rescue them!
Do you follow the rules on the outside but harbor darkness on the inside?
How are you asking God to make you clean today?
