Luke 20 – Are You Spying or Are You Sincere?

In Luke 20 there were several religious leaders and others on their side trying to trap Jesus with their questions rather than sincerely wanting to learn from Him.

Time after time Jesus knew exactly how to respond. He would often respond with a question. Sometimes he would respond with a parable. Other times he spoke with boldness and directly to them.

We need to ask questions, are we trying to get more evidence against Jesus or are we coming to Him with an open heart and open mind to what He may want to show us?

Message Notes:

In Luke 20 there were several religious leaders and others on their side trying to trap Jesus with their questions rather than sincerely wanting to learn from Him.

Verse 20 says: “they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere.”

Time after time Jesus knew exactly how to respond. He would often respond with a question. Sometimes he would respond with a parable. Other times he spoke with boldness and directly to them.

In this chapter we see all those types of responses. He asked a question in the case of when they asked where his authority originated which he then followed up with the parable of the evil tenants who killed the messengers and even the son of the landowner. He responded brilliantly to the question about paying taxes to Caesar and then he had a fascinating response to the question about marriage after the resurrection of the dead.

We discover from these insincere spies that both John the Baptist and Jesus were operating with authority from God, that we should be good citizens of our countries by respecting the laws of the land that do not go against our faith, and that life after death is not just a repeat of this life but something far beyond what we can comprehend.

When we come to God in prayer and reading the Scriptures, it is absolutely important that we come with our questions, our doubts, and our struggles. We need to ask questions. The key is are we coming to God with sincere hearts? Do we really want to know Him? Do we really want to know His ways?

Are we trying to get more evidence against Jesus or are we coming to Him with an open heart and open mind to what He may want to show us?
