John 9 – Do You Want to See?

In Jesus’ day people believed that someone who was born with disabilities must have sinned or his or her parents sinned.

Jesus dispels that notion saying that the man was not blind due to sin but that through his life he might glorify God.

The religious leaders try to get the healed man and his parents in trouble, but the healed man says: “I don’t know who healed me. All I know is, I once was blind, but now I can see.”

Message:

In Jesus’ day people believed that someone who was born with disabilities must have sinned or his or her parents sinned.

Jesus dispels that notion saying that the man was not blind due to sin but that through his life he might glorify God.

We may not know why we might face some struggles or issues that were born with, but we can trust that God still loves us, will be with us through the challenges, and we can still know Him personally and our lives can point others towards Him.

Jesus heals the man by putting mud on his eyes and then sending him to a pool to wash off the mud. It was journey that required trusting Jesus to experience healing rather than an instantaneous healing.

The religious officials begin investigating since the miracle took place on the sabbath. The man and the parents do not go along with the religious leaders who want them to help them build their case against Jesus. At one point the healed man says: “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (‭‭John‬ ‭9‬:‭25‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

The religious leaders accuse the healed man of being steeped in sin since birth.

Jesus then teaches how he can heal our spiritual blindness and help us see in ways we never could without Him.
