Jesus’ death and resurrection defeats “the prince of this world.”
As he leaves the Spirit will come and guide the disciples into truth.
Jesus encourages them with the following: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Message Notes:
Jesus continues to prepare his disciples for his departure. He warns them they will be put out of the synagogue, persecuted, and even killed. The world will reject them because the world rejected him.
He encourages the disciples that it is good that he is leaving because then the Holy Spirit will come to be with them. Up until now, they could only be in the presence of God when they were in his vicinity, but after the Spirit comes, they will have the presence of God within them!
Jesus mentions being gone for “a little while.” He promises that their grief will turn to joy much like a mother who goes through the pain of childbirth only to forget the pain while holding her newborn. He was referring to the grief they would experience at his death followed by the joy they would experience by seeing him alive again after the resurrection!
