Navigating New Age, New Thought, and Jesus: A Conversation with Melissa Dougherty

Recently on The Post-Christian Podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Melissa Dougherty, a popular YouTuber and author of the new book Happy Lies: How a Movement You (Probably) Never Heard Of Shaped Our Self-Obsessed World.

Her journey from New Thought beliefs to biblical Christianity offers valuable insights for those ministering in our post-Christian culture.

Melissa’s story is unique – while she grew up in what she considered a Christian household and became a Christian at 16, she later realized many of her beliefs, though they seemed Christian, actually weren’t. This led her to dive deep into apologetics and understanding the crucial differences between New Age and New Thought beliefs.

What makes her perspective particularly valuable is her emphasis on approaching conversations with grace and genuine curiosity. Rather than attacking others’ beliefs, she invites dialogue with the simple question: “Convince me.” This disarming approach opens doors for meaningful conversations about faith.

One key insight Melissa shared is that many people holding alternative beliefs aren’t necessarily concerned with truth – they’re often dealing with pain. “If what you are saying is true,” she explained, “that means I might get hurt again.” This understanding helps us approach conversations with both truth and compassion.

For church leaders serving in increasingly post-Christian contexts, Melissa offered both encouragement and a challenge:

  1. Don’t shy away from tough issues – your congregation is hungry for biblical truth
  2. Help people understand practical applications of the Scripture
  3. Recognize that these challenges are coming to every church
  4. Equip yourself to understand and address New Thought beliefs

“There’s a beauty in letting go and letting an external God take that for you,” Melissa shares. “That’s the beauty of the Christian message. It’s not just because it’s true, but it’s better.”

You can find Melissa’s resources at melissadougherty.co and on YouTube. Her new book “Happy Lies” offers valuable insights for anyone seeking to understand and reach people influenced by New Thought beliefs.
