Followers of Jesus are called to submit to governing authorities and live as responsible citizens.
All governing authorities are established by God and serve as instruments of His authority that are ultimately accountable to Him. The purpose of governing authorities is to maintain order, punish wrongdoing, and promote the well-being of society.
We are to do what is right, follow the laws of the land, and contribute positively to the community. In fact, all the commandments, such as those against stealing, murdering, and coveting, can be summed up in the command to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Love for others should guide believers in their interactions with the government and society at large.
We need to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light, embracing the values of righteousness, integrity, and love.
In our current context, we actually have a voice and an opportunity to bring change with peaceful protests, and the assumption in this chapter is that believers go along with the government unless the government is requiring us to go against our faith.
